Young patients at Evelina London Children’s Hospital enjoyed a magical day of joy and laughter as Gusta Sunshine Charity brought play, music, and special surprises to the wards in celebration of International Day of Play.
From the hospital’s atrium to outpatient areas and even bedside visits, children were treated to live music and singing, arts and crafts, and surprise visits from princesses and superheroes. Goodie bags—lovingly packed by volunteers from one of Gusta Sunshine Charity’s corporate supporters—were handed out to every child, filled with treats to brighten their day.
Adding to the excitement, local firefighters and police officers joined the celebration, inviting children to explore a real fire engine, try on helmets, and learn about firefighting equipment. Two gentle police horses were also on hand to meet the children, bringing smiles and awe to young faces.
One mother, whose daughter had been in hospital for two months, shared:
“Spending so much time in one room can feel so isolating for her. But when we were singing and dancing with the entertainers from Gusta Sunshine Charity, it felt like we were just having fun at home.”
The celebration at Evelina London was one of several events held by Gusta Sunshine Charity across hospitals in the UK to mark International Day of Play, reinforcing the vital role of play in children’s healthcare.
“Our Sunshine in Hospitals programme is designed to ease anxiety, lift spirits, and bring comfort to seriously ill children and their families during their hospital stay,” said [Spokesperson Name], Director of Fundraising & Communications at Gusta Sunshine Charity. “We are honoured to partner with Evelina London and other hospitals nationwide to bring hope, joy, and sunshine to children who need it most.”
Sue Pruden, Therapeutic Play Service Manager at Evelina London Children’s Hospital, added:
“We’re so grateful to Gusta Sunshine Charity for helping us celebrate the International Day of Play. Whether in our atrium or during personal bedside visits, every patient had the chance to enjoy the activities. These moments create lasting memories, provide much-needed distractions, and help make hospital stays feel a little more normal.”
